Crowns are an excellent restoration when a filling will no longer work.  When less than 50% of the tooth remains due to damage by decay or fractures, a crown is often the best choice.  A crown surrounds the tooth, bracing it together.  A large filling can act like a wedge, weakening the tooth.  Eventually, the tooth may break or split.

You may need a crown for the following reasons:

If you have teeth in the back that are mostly black (with silver amalgam), or teeth that are broken, those teeth may be candidates for natural-looking and very strong all-ceramic crowns.  That means no metal.  No darkness at the gum line.
